Map & Compass

Best as a half day activity . There is a choice of an introductory orienteering course in the lower part of Carding Mill Vallley or a larger more challenging mid-valley course. We begin with a variety of map reading activities including grid referencing and use of a compass. We can examine several types of map, possible indoors if just one class. The work is adaptable to many age groups (6 to 15 year olds). Groups of two or three students are required to identify eight out of forty possible markers set around the valley. Students are given a thirty-minute training session on reading a compass, map symbols, keys, orientation, etc. Again this activity can be mixed and matched with a half-day walk or river study.
