Field Study Labs

There are two small rooms that can seat 36 students who can use microscopes to examine what they catch in the stream and reference resources. Part of the session will be teaching pupils a variety of techniques. Each student will come away with a sheet whereby they have had to use a biotic index to estimate water pollution, research through indexes species and scientific names, use an ID key, complete a sketch and research some background information on the water invertebrate they caught. All this is modified for different age groups. Even infants can catch their own stream insects, use a microscope (hand lenses for those finding it difficult), identify and draw the creature.

In this service we guarantee one adult leader per class (but often about 1:15). Allow about 40 mins for this service
